This gallery exhibits artwork from all over the African continent, both traditional or antique and contemporary works. The pieces run the gamut from textiles to sculpture to musical instruments. The gallery is also part of a cultural center which includes a performance space and hosts theater, music (including African drumming), lectures and workshops.
This library gallery, part of the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), hosts both exhibits of the works from the Albin O. Kuhn collections and traveling exhibitions. In part because of the library's extensive photography collection, many of the exhibits focus on the photographic medium. The works are not for sale.
The American Visionary Arts museum defines visionary artists as self-taught individuals without formal art training who express their "innate personal vision" through their work, and presents one exhibit at a time, each based around a theme. In addition to its 6 galleries, the museum also boasts The Tall Sculpture Barn, The Giant Whirligig and Sculpture Plaza, and The Wildflower Garden. The Joy America Cafe adjoins the museum.
This museum, part of the Smithsonian Institute, is dedicated to documenting and examining the African-American experience and its exhibitions deal with African-American history and heritage as well as contemporary urban issues. It also hosts dance classes and workshops.
This Smithsonian museum, along with the adjoining Freer Gallery of Art, presents Asian art from ancient times to the present, from the Mediterranean to Japan. The permanent collection of over 1,000 works is supplemented by international loans. The gallery also houses a public research library of about 55,000 volumes, half in Chinese or Japanese.
The Asian Arts and Culture Center at Towson University has approximately 1,000 art objects from China, Korea, Japan, India, Tibet, Nepal, Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand. The collection includes ceramics, paintings, wood-block prints, textiles, carved ivories, wood, metal and stone sculpture, cloisonné enamels and furniture. Selected objects are displayed in the Asian Arts Gallery throughout the academic year.
The Audrey Herman Spotlighters Theatre puts on seven shows a season including two musicals, one children's show (usually over the holidays), and both well-known plays and ones by local playwrights. Many of the Spotlighters performances are based on contemporary plays.
The Baltimore Museum of Art is home to the renowned Cone Collection, and its permanent collection also includes American Painting and Decorative Arts, European Painting and Sculpture, Arts of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Oceania, Modern and Contemporary Art, Prints, Drawings and Photographs and a stunning sculpture garden. The museum also hosts several special exhibitions, which rotate throughout the year.
