We Say...

The string quartet is the guitar/bass/drums of the classical world. There are enough pieces to cover the tonal/harmonic bases, but the stripped-down setup forces composers to boil their approach down to basics; there must be something to the format that appeals to composers and players alike, because it's still popular with both after more than 200 years. The late Iannis Xenakis is perhaps best known for his radical compositional experiments and electroacoustic forays, but he wrote brilliant string-quartet music too; the New York-based JACK Quartet has made quite a name for itself in just a few years, not least by releasing the first-ever recording of all four of Xenakis' quartets in 2009. Tonight, the Mobtown Modern concert series opens its 2011-2012 season with JACK playing the complete Xenakis quartets. Don't miss. (Lee Gardner)
