If you haven't taken notice that Baltimore has in recent years exploded into being a hotbed of new music of all stripes, and especially improv/avant-garde and modern classical sounds, this fall is a most fine time to dive in. In that latter category of contemporary classical, we have not only more venues in support of it than cities twice Baltimore's size, but organizations ranging from the relatively forward-thinking Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to the Mobtown Modern series to the Evolution Contemporary Series, which packages a benefit show and season preview together tonight. Season seven, which consists of five shows between December and April 2012, is dubbed simply "Beyond Music" and takes on composers ranging from Arvo P?rt to the Peabody Institute's Michael Hersch, with every performance incorporating some nonmusical element: drawings, poetry, prose, theater. Partnering for the first time this season with the Baltimore School for the Arts and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids program, the Evolution Contemporary series is worth your support.
