  • Joe Squared

"Joe Squared looks like an off-campus dive bar, and that's a large part of its charm. Depending on who you are (scenester or square), you'd rate the ambiance with four stars or none. The large-format square pizzas are noteworthy for their thin crusts and creatively devised specialty toppings: an Irish pizza with corned beef, caramelized onions, mozzarella, and Swiss; a chicken, corn, and apple version with Granny Smiths and Vidalias; another with meatballs and spaghetti. Pasta dishes and ample entrée salads are also available. Start with wings or the good stuffed focaccia, and bear in mind the dodgy location."

We Say...

This sextet of psychedelic-rock scientists understands that 1967 was the zenith of music history, and they’re here to keep its good vibes and baroque pop alive. Half LSD-induced Lennon, half-Elephant Six Collective (the Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal), Fractal Cat pulls off a delicate balancing act that many cannot—textured, technicolor soundscapes anchored by bouncy, low-end sound-effect samples, driving acoustic rhythm guitar, multi-part harmonies, and just enough experimental jamming to keep audiences interested. And with the Fillmore East closed and the group just missing the Monterey Pop Festival, audiences will have to flock to Station North to turn on. (Aaron Pinto)
