Imagine a drawing class, add some burlesque dancers and some booze, and you have Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, a cabaret-themed alternative drawing movement founded in Brooklyn in 2005 by Molly Crabapple and A.V. Phibes, two artists looking to create a different sort of art-education experience. Models for Dr. Sketchy’s have ranged from burlesque dancers to trapeze artists, drag queens to off-duty police officers. Since 2005, Dr. Sketchy’s has spread to over 100 cities around the globe and the Windup Space hosts Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School Baltimore twice a month. So take a break from the conventional, embrace eccentricity, and go draw some burlesque dancers. Not an artist? Dr. Sketchy doesn’t judge. Just bring some art supplies (no paints allowed) and cash tips for the models. First come, first serve. (Nicolette Hatzidimitriou)
