Skate culture provides a lot of people with their first real introduction to art. Skating itself is a constant attempt at innovation: No sport has consistently changed so quickly, revolutionizing itself every couple years. Back when we skated seriously, you were either regular or goofy footed, but a couple years later, 11-year-old kids were able to ride “switch foot,” ignoring the previous limitation. What is radical for one generation quickly becomes standard for the next. Then, you build ramps (which Jordan Bernier has shown to be a sculptural exercise), paint your grip tape (and other stuff), and make videos. Gallery 788 highlights all this with Influenced, a show of skating, street art, and graffiti featuring more than 20 artists. They’ll have a ramp at the opening and some great bands like the Hard Dads and Me and This Army. (Baynard Woods)
