Celerbate 100 years of screen painting.
An art form found only in Baltimore and born wholly in Highlandtown, screen painting is 100-years-old this year! A premiere at The Patterson exactly 25 years ago, The Screen Painters tracks the birth of painting window screens and how it became an artform. Homeowners commissioned their screen doors and windows to be painted so that they could see out but passersby couldn’t see in. Painted screen scholar Elaine Eff joins in a post- film discussion with cinematographer ichard Chilsom, along with screen painters Dee Herget, Tom Lipka, and others. Little Castles, the short doc on Balti- more’s Formstone tradition, opens. Supported by The PNC Foundation.
Renowned hard bop pianist and composer Freddie Redd has moved to Baltimore. Redd is most famous for his soundtrack and part in the groundbreaking play and movie The Connection. We screen an excerpt tonight. Redd, an engaging soloist, has inspired many musicians, including Jackie McLean, Tina Brooks, Milt Hinton, and Louis Hayes. With internationally acclaimed bassist Michael Formanek, saxaphonist Brad Linde, and others, Redd celebrates the release of his new CD.
