Atwater's

Sometimes you want a really good sandwich--maybe some really good ham or turkey that you can't buy even at your local deli, stuck between slices of homemade bread, and slathered with some just-right condiment you don't have. Or maybe some steaming, flavorful homemade soup that you don't wanna spend hours making. Thankfully, there's Ned Atwater's thriving, friendly gourmet lunch counter in Govans' Belvedere Square. Problem solved.

Best of Baltimore Winner:

Best Iced Tea, Best Place to Eat Alone

It’s the simplest of summer drinks—tea, water, ice, maybe sugar—but somehow assembling a drinkable, fresh-brewed iced tea is a task beyond the capabilities of an alarming number of eateries in this town. Either they give up entirely—offering only a selection of ambitiously flavored bottled teas—or they produce some manner of undrinkable house-made swill. Similarly, Eating at this soup counter—arguably the main hub of Belvedere Market—is like going to a bar by yourself, but better. Bring a book, magazine, or copy of City Paper to disguise the fact that you’ll be people-watching for the duration of your lunch.
